Choose the right length and frame for a YouTube Short
Length, aspect ratio and resolution answer different questions. Length is how much time the idea needs. Aspect ratio describes the shape of the frame. Resolution describes its pixel dimensions. A file can have the right shape and still contain unreadable captions or a cut that makes little sense.
Start with the current destination rules, then make an editorial choice within them. Do not use a maximum upload duration as a target or assume a tool’s recommended clip length is the platform’s hard limit. The table below distinguishes the verified YouTube requirement from common production choices.
Eligibility versus an export recommendation
For standard channels, YouTube classifies square or vertical uploads of up to three minutes as Shorts under its current eligibility rules. The official guide also describes separate upload dates for Official Artist Channels. Check that source when dealing with older uploads or channel-specific circumstances.
| Decision | What it means | How to check |
|---|
| Duration | Platform eligibility permits up to three minutes; the useful idea may need much less. | Inspect the finished file duration. |
| Frame shape | A square or vertical frame meets the stated shape requirement. | Check width and height, then preview the whole frame. |
| Production size | 1080 × 1920 is a common 9:16 working canvas, not a requirement for every source. | Check whether the source remains clear after reframing. |
| Editor setting | A suggested clip-length setting is a product choice, not YouTube policy. | Read the settings available in your own workflow. |
Choose duration from the explanation
A direct demonstration might fit into a short excerpt. A comparison with a necessary qualification may need more time. Read the proposed transcript and underline the sentence that delivers the useful answer. Keep the minimum setup required to understand that sentence, then include the evidence or demonstration that makes it credible.
Avoid treating thirty, sixty or ninety seconds as an automatic quality rule. Extra time should add meaning, not repeat the introduction. Shorter edits are useful when they remove repetition while leaving the reasoning intact. Longer edits can be useful when the viewer needs to see the steps of a process.
Protect content when changing shape
Changing a wide recording to 9:16 can remove information at either side. Watch for a second speaker, a product held away from the face, or a slide that carries the point. A centered crop may look neat while losing the evidence the speaker is discussing. Containing more of the source can be the better choice.
For captions, judge the final apparent size on a phone-sized preview. Large pixel dimensions do not guarantee readable text. Check contrast over light and dark frames, line breaks around names and numbers, and space near interface overlays. Preview more than a static poster because subjects and caption lengths change.
An illustrative export comparison
Consider an owned landscape interview with a speaker on the left and a diagram on the right. A full-height crop keeps the speaker large but removes the diagram. A contained layout keeps both but makes labels smaller. The useful choice depends on the moment: use the speaker crop for an answer that needs only their expression, and preserve the diagram for the explanatory segment. This is a layout exercise, not a claim of automatic source detection.
Before upload, inspect the exported file rather than relying on a filename containing “vertical.” Play its first, middle and last sections, check duration, and confirm that the caption treatment appears once. If a later platform preview changes the crop, inspect that preview too and make a separate destination version when necessary.
Questions about this workflow
Are YouTube Shorts limited to sixty seconds?
The current official eligibility guide permits square or vertical Shorts up to three minutes. An editor may still offer shorter recommended selection settings; those are separate from platform eligibility.
Is 1080 × 1920 mandatory?
It is a common 9:16 production canvas. Use the official eligibility rules and verify the actual file and upload preview rather than treating that canvas as a universal minimum.
Can I stretch a landscape video into vertical?
Stretching changes people and objects. Crop or contain the source deliberately, and review what each option removes or makes smaller.
